  • The Red Shoes

The red shoes references the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of 1845 and it’s subsequent re-telling since. Notably in the 1948 British feature film about ballet, the performers desire to dance conflicts with her need for love, ultimately leading to her death. Dorothy wears the witches red shoes in Oz and David Bowie also encouraged us to dance the blues in our red shoes.

Red shoes symbolise a bitter sweet freedom. In this work freedom remains an intimate and cherished thought kept in a cushioned box.
