The Send Off – Art & Poetry Respond to WW1 – August and September 2014
A group exhibition curated by Franny Swann, the National Trust at Knole in Sevenoaks, Kent
In this centenary year WW1 will be a constant background theme to many of the exhibitions on offer in the grand houses of England. Here at Knole in the atmospheric calm of the Orangery eighteen contemporary artists from all over England have come together in response to seminal WW1 poetry by Carol Ann Duffy CBE and Wilfred Owen. Drawing inspiration from the same texts, this group of professional artists, exhibiting together for the first time, offer visitors a powerful exhibition working in diverse media including textiles, ceramics, sculpture, installation and glass.
Conceptual, contemporary art remains a perplexing puzzle for many, but the integrity and intelligent interrogation of the texts by these artists offers the viewer an accessible, thoughtful and thought provoking exhibition.
